CFD Consulting Services

We run one of Europe’s largest independent CFD teams. Over 500 projects a year, across every major simulation platform, in industries from hydrogen storage to offshore wind. If it flows, we’ve modelled it.

Most consultancies treat CFD as an add-on. We built our entire company around it.

FS Dynamics exists for one reason: to solve fluid dynamics problems that matter. We don’t sell software licences with some consulting on the side. We don’t dabble in simulation between other engineering tasks. Every engineer on our CFD team wakes up and works on flow problems — nothing else.

That singular focus has a practical consequence. When your automotive NVH team needs a conjugate heat transfer study done in three weeks, or your offshore team needs wave-load simulations validated against physical test data, we don’t need to “ramp up.” We’ve done it before. Probably this month.

Our consultants hold Master’s degrees in science and engineering as a minimum — many have PhDs — and they bring deep industry experience from working inside the sectors they serve. They know the regulations, the design constraints, the shortcuts that don’t actually save time, and the modelling choices that do.

The result: fewer design iterations, lower project costs, and products that perform the way they were supposed to.

What we actually do

CFD consulting covers a lot of ground. Here’s where we spend most of our time — and where we tend to make the biggest difference for our customers.

High-fidelity 3D flow analysis

Full geometric detail. Transient phenomena. Turbulence models matched to the physics, not to the deadline. We use high-performance computing clusters with parallel processing to run the simulations that desktop machines can’t handle — and that simpler models get wrong.

Thermal management & conjugate heat transfer

From battery cooling in EVs to thermal loads on nuclear piping, we couple fluid flow with heat conduction to predict real operating temperatures. Not estimates. Not “conservative assumptions.” Actual thermal behaviour, validated against test data where available.

Multiphase & reactive flows

Mixing, combustion, cavitation, free-surface flows, particle-laden streams — the problems where CFD gets genuinely difficult. We handle two-phase and three-phase flows routinely, because that’s what real processes look like.

Aerodynamics & external flows

Vehicle drag reduction. Wind loads on structures. Ventilation system design. We work with everything from full-vehicle aerodynamic models to localised flow analysis around specific components, always with an eye on what actually changes the performance number.

1D system simulation

Not every question needs a 3D model. For engine system performance, pipeline networks, or HVAC system sizing, we use 1D tools — RELAP5, Simcenter Amesim, GT-SUITE — to get answers fast and feed them into larger 3D analyses when the detail matters.

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI)

When the flow moves the structure and the structure changes the flow, you need coupled simulation. We bridge our CFD and FEA teams to handle FSI problems properly — not as an afterthought, but as an integrated analysis from day one.

How a typical engagement works

We adapt to your project, not the other way around. But most engagements follow a shape that looks something like this.

STEP 01

Scope the real question

Before we open a mesh tool, we make sure we’re solving the right problem. What decision does this simulation need to support? What accuracy is required? What’s the timeline? Getting this right saves weeks later.

STEP 02

Model, run, validate

We set up the geometry, select the physics models, define boundary conditions, and run the simulation on our HPC clusters. Where possible, we validate against existing test data or analytical solutions. No black-box results.

STEP 03

Deliver insight, not just data

A colour plot isn’t an answer. We interpret results in the context of your engineering problem, recommend design changes, and quantify the impact. You get a clear recommendation — not a 200-slide results dump.

Software and platforms we work with

We’re tool-agnostic by principle. The right solver depends on the problem, not on who has the best marketing. That said, these are the platforms we use most — and where our team has the deepest expertise.

Simcenter STAR-CCM+

Our primary general-purpose CFD platform. Polyhedral meshing, overset grids, multiphysics coupling. We use it for everything from automotive underhood thermal to marine propeller cavitation.

ANSYS Fluent

Widely used across our customer base, especially in process industry and power generation. Strong on combustion modelling and legacy project continuity.

Altair CFD

Growing platform for aerodynamics and thermal management. We use it where the Altair ecosystem — including HyperMesh and OptiStruct — adds value to the overall workflow.

RELAP5

Our tool of choice for nuclear thermal-hydraulic analysis. 1D system simulation for reactor cooling circuits, safety analysis, and transient scenarios according to regulatory standards.

Simcenter Amesim

System-level simulation for hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, and electrical systems. We couple it with 3D CFD for multi-fidelity analysis where system behaviour drives component performance.

GT-SUITE

Engine and vehicle system simulation. Used heavily in powertrain development — exhaust aftertreatment, turbocharger matching, thermal management circuits.

Industries we work in

We serve a broad range of sectors, but we’re not generalists who happen to know CFD. In each of these industries, we have consultants with hands-on experience from working inside the sector.

Automotive

Underhood thermal management, exterior aerodynamics, brake cooling, HVAC, water management. We support OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers through full vehicle development cycles — from concept to production validation.

Energy & power generation

Fossil-free power production, hydrogen applications, turbine flows, combustion analysis, and heat exchanger optimisation. We help energy companies navigate the transition to clean technologies with simulation that reduces physical testing.

Marine & offshore

Propeller cavitation, hull resistance, wave loading, subsea equipment cooling, and FPSO ventilation. Our offshore work extends to structural loading analysis where we couple CFD with FEA for integrated wave-structure assessments.

Nuclear

Thermal-hydraulic analysis of reactor systems, ASME standard pipe stress evaluation, seismic qualification of safety-critical components. We are a leading competence supplier within nuclear CFD in Scandinavia.

Semiconductors & electronics

Cleanroom airflow, chip-level thermal management, equipment cooling, and contamination control. Precision matters here — we model at the scales and accuracies the semiconductor industry demands.

Life science & emerging fields

Medical device flow analysis, pharmaceutical process simulation, aquaculture flow modelling, and cryogenic systems for nano-manufacturing. Some of our most interesting work happens where CFD meets a field that hasn’t used it much before.

Why customers choose us

We don’t expect you to take our word for it. But here’s what we consistently hear from the 200+ companies that work with us.

We go deep, fast

Because our team works on CFD projects full-time, across industries, we’ve seen most problems before. That means less ramp-up time for you and faster time to a useful answer. When your team has been stuck on a convergence issue for two weeks, we can usually diagnose it in a day.

We're honest about what simulation can — and can't — tell you

Simulation is powerful, but it’s not magic. We’ll tell you when a problem is better solved with a physical test, when the model uncertainty is too high to make a design decision, and when a simpler approach gets you 90% of the answer at 10% of the cost. That honesty is why customers come back.

We scale to your needs

Need one senior consultant embedded in your team for six months? We do that. Need a full simulation study delivered turnkey in four weeks? We do that too. Need someone to help you build an internal simulation capability from scratch? That’s some of our favourite work.

We're not tied to one software vendor

We use STAR-CCM+, Fluent, Altair CFD, RELAP5, Amesim, and GT-SUITE — not because we’re indecisive, but because different problems need different tools. Through our partnership with Volupe, we also offer software licensing, training, and HPC cloud solutions as part of a complete simulation platform.

Common questions about CFD consulting

It depends on the complexity. A straightforward single-component steady-state analysis might take one to two weeks. A full vehicle transient thermal study with design optimisation could run for two to three months. We scope every project upfront so you know the timeline before we start.

Ideally, yes — native CAD or STEP files are the fastest starting point. But we’re used to working with whatever geometry data is available, including scanned meshes, 2D drawings, or even photographs of existing equipment. We can also clean up and simplify complex assemblies for simulation.

Absolutely. Many of our customers have in-house simulation capabilities and bring us in for specialist problems or peak capacity. We pick up existing models, review the setup, and extend the analysis — no need to start from scratch.

In-house teams give you permanent capacity and deep product knowledge. Consultants give you specialist expertise across a wider range of problems, flexibility to scale up and down, and exposure to methods and practices from other industries. Most of our customers use a mix of both — and we help them figure out the right balance.

Yes. Through our partnership with Volupe, we offer training in STAR-CCM+ and other Siemens simulation tools. We also run custom workshops on CFD best practices, tailored to your team’s experience level and application area.
